Frozen Fish
It’s a common misconception that frozen fish is of less nutritional value than "fresh" fish. It’s also a common misconception that frozen fish does not taste as good as "fresh" fish. It’s common because the word "fresh" has taken on a cultural value in today’s society that imbues it with some sort of magical powers with regards to our health and well-being.
But here’s a little secret: most "fresh" fish you’ve ever consumed has been frozen at one point or another. I’ll say it again: Frozen fish can be marked as "fresh."
The difference is in the amount of time and type of freezing that the fish undergoes. In the case of frozen fish that is then marked "Fresh", the freezing occurs rapidly – as soon as it is filletted – and lasts only for the duration of transport. The goal is to get the fish from the boat to the market or restaurant in as good shape as possilbe, and the best method of doing that is to flash freeze it and then take it away.

Fishing Equipment
Some men and women think there is nothing more relaxing than an afternoon with a fishing pole and a gentle breeze. There may be something to this, but I tend to be too worked up about what I should do when I get a bite. I guess I just don’t have enough experience with it to relax and enjoy it for what it is. My husband, however, takes his fishing very seriously, and he knows now to take care of his fishing equipment so that he does not have to buy new stuff each year when his favorite fish come into season.
If you have a boat as part of your fishing equipment, you may already know how to take care of it. Some simple things that can help is to be sure you put it away when the weather turns cold and you know you won’t be using it for a while. Keeping it up off the ground can help, and having the top covered with tarp is always a good idea too. If water sits in the bottom of the boat and thaws and freezes repeatedly, it can do some damage to the material of which the boat is made. This is probably your most expensive piece of fishing equipment, so give it the most attention.
Your rod and reel are important too, as you know, because you can’t catch fish without them. You should always be sure to have a rod strong enough for your type of fishing, and you should also have the right strength of fishing wire. You don’t want something too heavy for your rod, but if it’s too weak, it’ll break. This type of fishing equipment is easier to care for, but is also what you may have to keep your eye on the most. Look for cracks and bends in your rods after a time, and replace your fishing line often so it does not snap on you when you need it the most.

Africa Vacation
Johannesburg is the very spirit of South Africa, in some ways; and a South Africa vacation would not be complete without a civilized introduction to the city. Let’s cover a little bit of everything in Johannesburg, and take in a couple of day trips right outside the city too. Johannesburg has great shopping; spend time rifling through a bunch of attractive ethnic handicrafts and other odds and ends, and be sure to try Deer Hunter in Greenside; you’ll find it on Greenway Road. The reason it’s such a great place for souvenir hunters to go to is, the good folks who run the shop scour artisan workshops and collectors across the country for the best stuff to bring stock. Apart from your usual ethnic paintings and clothes, you’ll also find great old records and movie memorabilia. There are so many interesting little knick-knacks in there that you’ll find yourself lingering next to any number of little objects, probably reminded of one little thing or another there that caught your fancy when you were a child. If you are interested in antiques, try the boutiques on Queen Street in Kensington (in Johannesburg, not London).
Johannesburg has great cosmopolitan food. Try the Pimento (no, they don’t just serve chili) for great South African versions of Italian originals like pizza, pasta and filet steaks. Or how about the Lapa Fo in Emmarentia on Barry Hertzog Avenue? They make dozens of kinds of pizza too. If you hanker after something a little less Mediterranean, try the sandwiches at Solly’s Corner on Bree Street; they’ve made a kind of reputation for themselves, and people from all over the world make a point of coming here when they come on a South Africa vacation. For coffee, the local Starbucks knockoff, Vida E Caffè, is pretty good.
So there was your standard Johannesburg day out. How about exploring the places around, for a little improved perspective though? One of the best day trips there are to be had, involves a trip to the mountain range of Drakensberg, a couple of hundred miles from Johannesburg. There’s a lot of great rugged activity to be had, horseback riding, fishing and so on. If you can’t venture that far, try Parys, a kind of historic old town set up with great antique stores and antique restaurants. And if you have even less time, try Lion Park, a place you can hold a lion cub in your hands. It’ll really make your day on this South Africa vacation.

Fishing Boats
the first time I went on a fishing boat I was about 25 years old. I had always been scared of water previously and, to be honest, if I hadn’t been a bit drunk and in sort of a reckless mood that day, I wouldn’t have even agree to go out. The friend who took me out was just the opposite of me. He had practically been raised on fishing boats. He had been sea fishing, lake fishing, river fly fishing – he had done pretty much any kind of fishing you could think of. He had even done it professionally for a couple of years, but had left that life behind because he missed his girlfriend too much.
The sort of expedition we were going on was pretty tame in comparison to some of the stuff he had done. This was not one of those big deep sea fishing boats that I used to watch going out to sea when our family would take trips out to the ocean side. This was just a little aluminum fishing boat – basically a small, flat bottomed boat with a little outboard motor on it. It was stable for its size, but its size wasn’t very big.
As soon as we left sure, I started to regret it. As I said, I’d never been on fishing boats before, and rocking back and forth, already a little tipsy, was doing nothing to assuage my anxious stomach. All my other friends made fun of me because I was hanging on for dear life as we went along at the overwhelming speed of 5 knots.
