To catch the elusive bass, preparation and practice are necessary. Bass fishing can be a tricky sport if done incorrectly. However, if spools are maintained, an individual practices, and good bait and technique are used, fish will be caught.

Before going fishing, make sure proper care is taken of spools. If a spool is only half filled with line then more force will be required to get the spool working. This may cause problems. For best results always make sure spools are filled with the right amount of line.

Casting plugs are ideal for practicing. With their use, techniques can be practiced and perfected in an individuals own backyard. The largest available plug is best at first. Sit in a chair and hold the rod and reel as the plug falls to the ground. Practice slowing it as it falls down. When it reaches the ground stop it completely with a thumb on the spool. All of this should be done for half an hour daily to get best results.

Over time plugs should begin landing directly on targets, far away or close. Proper form while casting is to keep the upper arm in place and to move only the elbow and wrist. A great reel is a bait caster reel, needing only one hand for its operation. It is also great in that line usually doesn't twist as it is cast with this reel type. It functions well with either heavy or light line.

In order to be successful individuals will also need to pick an appropriate bait. The three best kinds are lipless crankbaits, topwaters, and spinnerbaits. Lipless crank baits are the best way to locate a bass in grass. Placing this bait on top of the grass and moving it around will get the fish to strike. Topwaters are most effective in the early morning, late evening, and during little wind with actively forming ripples. Spinnerbaits are great because they travel fast both to the water and within it.

After preparations and practicing are complete, attempt real fishing. There are four types of bass most common in the US that can be caught. These are the largemouth, smallmouth, spotted and Guadalupe bass. The largemouth has dark horizontal stripes and is the largest of all four. The smallmouth has dark vertical stripes. Spotted varieties have colorings identical to largemouths but have smaller mouths. The last type, the Guadalupe, is the smallest of all and is on the vulnerable species list.

After decisions have been made which variety is being fished for, travel to the correct location. For most success, fish either at dawn or at dusk. Once in the appropriate area, locate a target within the water. Bass can be found near schools of bait fish and they hide in nearby covered areas. Direct efforts to a targeted spot using the spool control skills practiced beforehand. If the spool is also properly filled it will be easily maneuverable. Using the three bait types previously mentioned, it is very likely that fish will be caught.

Fishing can be a very enjoyable and successful experience if it is approached in the right way. The right supplies and maintenance of these supplies is key for their proper functioning. Skill and good technique is also helpful, which can be gained through practice. With the use of the correct bait as well, chances are that the fisherman will catch his fish.
